Davenport Recognizes Students and Staff in Back to School Lone Star Cup Celebration

August 12, 2026 - “We are the standard, back to work” is this year's motto for Davenport High School. After achieving such a prestigious award, Davenport is setting the tone for the school year and recommitting itself to the pursuit of excellence with a high energy celebration which included the students who made this achievement possible.

“As the Principal of Davenport High School, I get to live in this building day in and day out,” explains Angela Looney. “We set our goals to be an “A” campus and to win the Lone Star Cup, so to watch this campus live out what we showed up to do, which is build family and take care of each other in that endless pursuit of excellence, feels really good, and we did it by owning it every day.”

Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach James Zimmerhanzel is approaching the school year with the same ‘recipe for success.’ “The kids have an unwavering commitment to not only themselves, but for the campus and each other, so we as educators are going to continue to support our students in any way possible – which is what we have done since the school opened.”

Entering its seventh school year, DHS has set a high bar for not only its campus, but the district as well. From an outstanding overall accountability rating jump from 88 to 95, an over 99% graduation rate and an awarded 563 industry based certifications in the 25-26 school year, DHS has taken Growing Greatness to the next level.

“The Lone Star Cup is something that I have never been able to accomplish as a coach, high school principal, and now almost three decades as a superintendent,” says Superintendent Dr. John Chapman. “It is a complete reflection of all they do; knowing each student by name and need, and ultimately, their report card being a 95 is just icing on the cake. A great community effort moving forward with one vision – to make this a successful year.”
