Monday, Aug. 2, 2021 - The Canyon Lake Noon Lions presented a check for $2,798.51 to the essential academics (EA) team at Mountain Valley Middle School on Monday, July 26. This donation will cover the team’s ‘wish list’ to improve the learning environment for special needs students on campus.
“It was a unanimous decision to help purchase everything on the list which was presented to us,” explained Diane Schaule, a Canyon Lake Noon Lions member who toured the EA classrooms last spring. “I understand the challenges that both the students and teachers face, and it is really near and dear to my heart. The Lions are pleased to partner with the school on this project.”
That unanimous decision will allow the MVMS EA team, including Lisa Johnson and Tonya Waller, EA teachers, to purchase sensory, vocational and academic items which will help with individualized instruction and more.
“We have discussed on many occasions our vision to move beyond meeting basic needs and enhancing the abilities and experiences of our community’s children,” Johnson said, and this donation allows them to do just that.
The sensory items will be used to provide sensory stimulation which helps students focus and thrive; and the vocational skills are imperative to ensure that students can succeed as adults.
A few of the programs offered to EA students at MVMS which help them become more independent include a vegetable garden, kitchen, grocery store and coffee business, called Brewing Independence. Students learn with hand-on activities such as cooking, cleaning, measuring, working, budgeting and shopping.
Comal ISD is grateful for the support of community partners such as the Canyon Lake Noon Lions.
